Opposition to Proposed Two-Way Bike Lane on Mt. Pleasant Ave.

Ward 5 Neighbors Speak Up & Out

During a recent Ward 5 Community Meeting, a resident voices concerns about the proposed two-way bike lane on Mt. Pleasant Ave.

Over the past months I have engaged with my neighbors in Elmhurst, Mount Pleasant, and Manton and they have been clear in their sentiments - they do not want a two-way bike lane on Mt. Pleasant Avenue. Residents, schools, and businesses are already taxed by traffic on this major corridor in the Fifth Ward. I and my neighbors are not against cyclist or bike lanes, we are against not being included in any kind of robust engagement that must go with a major redesign of their neighborhood.

Everyone was quite open to the idea of traditional bike lanes - that flow with traffic. This video shows what they had to say regarding Mayor Elorza’s plan to implement a bike lane treatment that will only go to cause further delays, and will most definitely not make their street “great!”

I encourage everyone who is opposed to the two-way bike treatment to sign our petition here. And then please plan on attending the Mayor’s Information Session on January 28th at Mt. Pleasant High School. Details are here.

Together, we can and must have a say in how our community is designed. It is apparent to me that my neighbors are opposed to this design and I stand with you and will continue to advocate on your behalf!
