A Night of Unity

Tonight is the Start of the Yearly 7-Day Festival

Kwaanza, a 7-day festival celebrated by African American families looking to connect with their ancestral roots, begins tonight.

Each year Kwaanza starts on December 26 and runs over seven days, where each day embodies one of the seven principles represented by its name in Swahili. They are (in order):

  • Umoja = Unity

  • Kujichagulia = self-Determination

  • Ujima = Community service

  • Ujamaa = Cooperative economics

  • Nia = Purpose

  • Kuumba = Creativity

  • Imani = Faith

To all who participate, may tonight be the start of a beautiful Kwaanza celebration and a joyful end to a difficult and challenging year.
